The Role

We are seeking an excellent academic to join our staff as Assistant Lecturer in Teacher Education with Specialism in Professional Practice. S/he should have a Doctorate in Education (or cognate area) or be nearing completion of their Doctorate. The preferred candidate will be expected to contribute to the teaching and research programmes of the Department, undertaking teaching duties on the Department’s Initial Teacher Education programmes at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The Assistant Lecturer in Professional Practice will have the theoretical and professional knowledge required to develop student teachers’ practice in classrooms and schools and improve the departments capacity in this regard. Experience of working in support of new and pre-service teachers and researching into school-based settings is highly desirable. The preferred candidate will also be able to work collaboratively in supporting the collegial work of the Department and to assume administrative duties, in particular on Initial teacher Education Programmes and as required on the Department’s other programmes.

The appointee will be expected to establish and build a research profile, requisite to the role of Assistant Lecturer, that supports the University’s research strategy, including affiliating to the Research Institutes, where appropriate, and working with colleagues on national and international research. The appointee will be expected to sustain and conduct research, engage in scholarship of quality and substance, undertake engaged research leading to publications of international standard. The person appointed will have a record of teaching, research, and publication, appropriate to career stage.

Principal Duties

Teaching and Supervision:

Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervisory duties are assigned by the Head of the Department.

The duties will include:

  • Teaching and assessing students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. This will include lecturing, tutoring, leading practical learning activities, project supervision, supervision of student research activities, and setting/grading assignments;
  • Supervising student teachers on school placement;
  • Collaborating with the School Placement Officer in the development of field-oriented colleagues;
  • Enhancing and innovating in field-oriented curriculum, teaching and assessment practice;
  • Contributing, as required, to the assurance and enhancement of teaching quality;
  • Outreach and promotional activities and the recruitment and selection of undergraduate and post-graduate students;
  • Establish and develop school-based support of student teachers;
  • Identify and improve opportunities for collaboration between schools and ITE programme staff
