Duties of the Role

Based in the Law Clinic, the role will involve supervising advice, representation and other legal services delivered to members of the public by students working, assisting with their training students, and contributing to developing the Clinic’s policies, procedures and direction. The appointee will contribute to the Law School’s development of innovative and engaging clinical legal education and pedagogy.

The appointee to either a teaching only (ASE) or teaching and research (ASER) contract will also contribute to teaching core and optional undergraduate modules, and demonstrate a commitment to providing an engaging, innovative curriculum that meets the modern needs of our student body. The successful candidate will take an active role in the administration of the Law Clinic and/or the School. An ASER appointee will produce high-quality research in their area of expertise.

Skills and qualifications required

Applicants will have a relevant doctoral level research degree or equivalent professional experience/practice or be close to completion of a PhD, as well as having an undergraduate/postgraduate degree in law (or equivalent professional experience). Applicants will be an experienced legal practitioner and/or law clinician with expertise in one or more areas of social welfare law, preferably family law, but also other areas such as employment, housing, immigration and asylum, mental health, or welfare benefits law. They will have substantial experience in practitioner training clinical legal education or teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels. They will be able to supervise students undertaking legal cases, engage in teaching and learning support in engaging and innovative ways, teach in the undergraduate or postgraduate curriculum and demonstrate a commitment to enhancing social justice.

Candidates for an ASER contract will demonstrate a research agenda, which pursues individual and/or collaborative research objectives, and produce research outputs for publication and generate research income appropriate in scale to career stage.
