Job description
Applications are invited for an Imaging Specialist Technician to manage the Birmingham Advanced Light Microscopy (BALM) facility. The BALM facility is based in the School of Biosciences within the College of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham.
BALM is an open facility that provides cutting edge microscopy resources to members of the University community and beyond. It houses a wide variety of microscopes, including several laser scanning confocal microscopes and live-cell and time-lapse microscopy to carry out research in a wide range of disciplines.
We are looking for an individual with significant hands-on experience of a wide range of microscopy and imaging analysis techniques as the role will be to oversee the daily operation of the facility and support its users. This will involve overseeing the facility finances, booking system and data storage platform, use and demonstration of microscopes, training to all users and provision of expert advice, performing interim maintenance and organising planned preventative maintenance contracts and visits. The post-holder will be expected to attend microscopy conferences and stay up to date in the latest developments in the field, as well as engaging with networks of similar facilities globally and driving the acquisition of new equipment. They will also engage with academics on development of grant applications and provide hands-on support and advice. The post holder will also be expected to ensure all relevant documentation is in place e.g., risk assessments and standard operating procedures.
