We are a world class research-intensive university. We deliver teaching and learning of the highest quality. We play a leading role in economic, social and cultural development of the North East of England. Attracting and retaining high-calibre people is fundamental to our continued success.
The Role
The School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics wishes to appoint a Lecturer in Medieval Literature (Teaching and Scholarship). This is a full-time (1 FTE) fixed-term appointment for 13 months: the start date is 8 January 2024 and the end date is 7 February 2025. This post is a maternity cover post for Dr Aditi Nafde.
You will have a PhD in a relevant subject area and proven experience in teaching Old English and Middle English literature to undergraduate students; experience of working with taught postgraduate students is desirable.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach medieval literature on survey modules at Stage 1 and contribute to Stage 2 and 3 modules. At Stage 2, the successful candidate will convene and contribute to teaching an Old English language and literature module. At Stage 3, the successful candidate will design and convene a sole-taught Middle English module, including Chaucer and war writing. Teaching on our Masters degree will also form part the responsibilities. A record of high-quality research-led teaching in the period is essential; the ability to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research students working on medieval literature is desirable.
