The Department of English of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) invites applications for the position of Associate/ Assistant Professor of English Linguistics with expertise in computational linguistics and training in formal linguistics. Subfield specialisations might include any formal or applied areas of linguistics. In addition to offering courses within the BA and MA programmes in English Studies, the successful candidate will develop and teach courses in MSc in Computational Linguistics (offered jointly with computer scientists) and supervise research projects within the programme. Research and teaching experience in corpus linguistics, natural language processing and/or digital humanities is preferred.
The Department of English is an established and distinguished multinational, scholarly community. The Department offers an undergraduate degree in English Studies (focusing simultaneously on literary studies and linguistics), as well as elective courses in translation studies. At the graduate level the Department hosts two MA programmes in (i) English Studies and (ii) Translation and PhD degrees in either (a) Literary Studies or (b) Linguistics. FAH is home to both the Centre for Linguistics <https://linguistics.fah.um.edu.mo/> and the Centre for Studies of Translation, Interpreting and Cognition <https://cstic.um.edu.mo/>. The Department of English actively offers courses in the Computational Linguistics specialisation of the Programme of MSc in Data Science offered by the Institute of Collaborative Innovation <https://ici.um.edu.mo/>.
The successful candidate should have a PhD in Linguistics or related areas, teaching experience at the tertiary level (particularly for the application of Associate Professor), and a record of research appropriate to the rank of Associate/Assistant Professor. Applicants should be able to demonstrate competence in teaching, promising potential publication, a willingness to provide service to the University and the Department of English, and an interest in the English language in Asian contexts. Candidates with quality research publications and teaching experience in computational linguistics are particularly welcome.
The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in August 2024.
A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP828,100 (approximately USD102,230) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
