The Post

The post of Senior Student Conduct and Casework Officer is part of Academic Registry and sits within the Student Conduct and Casework area of the team, which is responsible for the management, delivery and development of the University’s arrangements, policies and procedures relevant to student conduct and casework including, student discipline, complaints handling, academic appeals, fitness to study.

The Senior Student Conduct and Casework Officer plays a key role in ensuring University governance procedures such as student discipline, complaints handling, and academic appeals are robust, transparent, and fair. The post-holder proactively manages a varied and oftentimes complex caseload, and nurtures strategic relationships both internally and externally to the institution, whilst also providing operational input in other areas of the team’s work, and therefore supports a comprehensive operating platform.

Description of duties

  • Manage a caseload of student conduct and other casework including complaints handling, in line with relevant policy and procedure, planning and coordinating appropriate action, and ensuring cases progress in a timely manner through to the point of final conclusion
  • Contribute to the effective monitoring and prioritisation of the caseload
  • Undertake investigations as required, in line with agreed Academic Registry approaches and arrangements to ensure consistent thoroughness and robustness
  • Ensure that all required record keeping in relation to caseload and investigations is completed accurately
  • Contribute to the undertaking of risk assessment as required
  • Prepare a range of reports as required, including data reporting and analysis, to meet both internal and external requirements
  • Work with an approach that ensures consistent adherence to the requirements of GDPR and appropriate confidentiality within the parameters and circumstances of each case

Essential criteria

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent qualification or demonstrable professional experience across a range of roles with increasing levels of responsibility
  • Experience of working in complaints handling/investigation in a higher education/further education/public sector environment
  • Experience working successfully within complex regulations / frameworks
  • Experience of writing, consulting on, and launching policy
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to effectively coordinate and manage a multi-task workload
  • Excellent skills in effectively communicating on a verbal basis at all levels using a wide range of styles appropriate to different individuals, groups and situations
