This 13-month post has been created as part of an ongoing Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between the world-class Materials Engineering Research Institute at Sheffield Hallam University and Chemetall Ltd.
As part of BASF, Chemetall is a leading global supplier of Applied Surface Treatments for metal, plastic, and glass substrates. Chemetall Ltd specialises in the chemical treatment of metal surfaces in a wide range of industries from automotive to aerospace. With headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany, the company has over 2,500 employees, 40 subsidiaries and 21 production sites. It has its own sales offices, production facilities, service teams, laboratories and warehouses at locations all around the world.
This exciting opportunity requires a high-calibre Chemist, Materials or Chemical Engineer to lead a project developing and commercialising a new and strategic technology for the surface treatments of metal. The outcome will result in a scalable process that offers improved efficiency, safety and sustainability that has the potential to play a significant role in Chemetall’s growth.
As part of a dedicated team, you will undertake the formulation of surface treatment chemistries to be used in a novel process, assessing and optimising their performance on steel substrates, before undertaking pilot-scale trials and supporting the launch-to-market of the product. The role will have you working on a high-profile project within a global company and is a great opportunity to play a significant role in the company's growth.
As a minimum, you will have a degree or equivalent experience in a relevant science or engineering discipline. You will be experienced at leading research projects and have excellent planning, organisation and communication skills. An advanced knowledge of electrochemical, chemical, or physical treatment processes and analytical characterisation and testing of solutions and material surfaces, especially steels, is highly desirable.
The appointment carries a range of benefits including a competitive salary (plus incentives including a significant individual training budget). Reviews and bonus-based rewards will be assessed as the project progresses. Residential off-site management training will also be provided free of charge.
This position forms part of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership funded by Innovate UK. KTPs bring together universities and businesses to work together on a development project that is strategically important to the organisation’s future. KTP projects are delivered by graduates who enhance their career prospects by benefiting from business-based training and personal and professional development.
