Sheffield Hallam University Technical Operations Resources and Services (TORS) are excited to welcome a new Technical Specialist supporting aerospace and material science in our undergraduate engineering laboratories. Based within the smaller Computing, Engineering, Technology and Analysis team you will be responsible for supporting staff and students along with laboratory equipment to facilitate taught activities and project work within labs that supports aerospace and material science.
You will be educated to HND or above (or have equivalent level of experience) in a relevant subject and have previous experience in working with wind tunnels and material preparation and testing. You should also be a team worker, well-organised and possess good communication and IT skills.
In the aerospace area you would be supporting the use of a subsonic wind tunnel and smaller ones specifically modelling airflow over a wing surface. In the material support area, you would be using equipment to determine the tensile strength, tensile impact strength of engineering materials, along with their Vickers hardness. In addition, having knowledge of the effect of heat treatment on alloys would be advantageous along with experience preparing and polishing metal samples for optical microscope investigations.
It is expected that you will provide expertise to other technical teams within TORS and support other laboratories associated with the Engineering area from time to time. Some flexibility towards working hours is also required. You do not need to be an expert across all our aerospace and materials activities; however, you do need a can-do attitude, be adaptable, flexible and enjoy learning new skills.
