About this project:
This PhD will collaboratively build citizen science approaches to investigate the effectiveness of “Ecological Enhancement” on coastal defence structures by working with citizen scientists to identify and monitor species. Communities will co-create ecological investigations, using their findings to recommend simple, low-cost engineering solutions (e.g. rock pool creation and adding texture to structures) to enhance coastal biodiversity. These non-formal learning activities (i.e. experiential) are reported as effective for encouraging pro-environmental behaviour among adults, yet evaluation is limited. Crucially, this PhD will evaluate the impacts of citizen science to understand whether these approaches enhance Ocean Literacy and cultivate coastal stewardship.
