We are looking for a Post-doctoral Research Fellow to join our UKRI (NERC) funded project “Figuring Out how to Reconstruct Common Era forcing of climate by VOLcanoes with novel data and modelling approaches (FORCE-VOL)”. This exciting opportunity is part of a collaborative project working with colleagues at Durham University, University of Oslo, and the British Antarctic Survey to improve our records of volcanic forcing of climate. Specifically, the Post-doctoral Research Fellow will measure sulfur isotopes in ice cores from from recent eruptions to calibrate how ice core records of volcanism can be used to reconstruct stratospheric sulfur loading and aerosol optical depth in the past, critical parameters for determining volcanic climate impacts.
The successful applicant will have (or be near to completion of) a PhD in Earth Sciences or related field with expertise in geochemistry. Strong candidates will have technical expertise in clean lab geochemistry and isotope analysis by MC-ICPMS, and it will be desirable to have expertise in volcanism, paleoclimate or ice core chemistry. The postdoctoral research fellow would join a dynamic cohort of research fellows within the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences.
The post is available for 36 months starting February 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
