Software Developer - Backend

European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) - Open Targets

About the team/job

We are looking for an enthusiastic and driven Backend Software Developer to join Open Targets at EMBL-EBI. We are open to applicants at different career stages, but we are keen to find someone who wants to embrace cutting-edge technologies in order to tackle complex challenges in drug discovery and informatics.

As a key member of the Open Targets Core team, you will help design, build and operate cloud-first software tailored for the interface between large-scale biomedical data and drug discovery. Together with the other Open Targets partners (BMS, Genentech, GSK, Sanofi, Pfizer, and Wellcome Sanger Institute) you will contribute to the development of current and future informatics tools designed to support the identification and prioritisation of drug targets. Using cutting-edge technologies and leveraging the expertise of our product owners and industry stakeholders, you will work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary, international environment to tackle a wide range of algorithmic and technical challenges.

Our open-source codebases power our flagship applications, the Open Targets Platform and the Open Targets Genetics. To help our users answer their research questions, harmonised data generated by experts in different scientific domains is consumed by our ETL pipelines written in Scala and Spark. The data ingested to ElasticSearch and ClickHouse is later served by our GraphQL APIs using the Play framework and consumed by our React-based web interface. All applications are deployed and served in Google Cloud Platform using Terraform.

Check out our blog to learn more about our recent work and what it is like to join our team. You can also visit the Open Targets Community to see first-hand how our data and tools are used to help researchers unlock insights to solve some of the most complex biological questions.

Your role

Working as part of a dynamic, collaborative and international team with members that come from various professional backgrounds, you will be responsible for:

  • Writing clean, efficient and readable code to support our Python based internal pipelines
  • Contributing to the design and implementation of our GraphQL interface using the Play Framework
  • Supporting our global load-balanced, multi-region infrastructure running in GCP deployed using Terraform
  • Taking ownership of the design and development of new features and pipelines, and independent problem-solving to resolve complex issues
  • Responsible for running the Backend components for our regular release cycle of the Open Targets Platform and Open Targets Genetics
  • You will have the opportunity to engage in knowledge sharing activities and contributing technical expertise to our Community and blog

You have

  • Qualifications in computer science, software development, or a related field
  • Experience building high-quality software and making frequent deployments as part of a regular software release process
  • Proficiency in at least one statically typed programming language and enthusiasm to master functional programming
  • Exposure to source code version control software such as Git
  • Experience working with infrastructure-as-code, continuous integration, containers, Cloud infrastructure and deployment.
  • Experience in independent problem-solving and examples of resolving complex issues
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Ability to effectively communicate ideas or issues and work with team members from multidisciplinary backgrounds
  • Exposure to a Python-based software environment

You might also have

  • Experience with NoSQL (Elasticsearch) and SQL (Clickhouse) databases
  • Experience working flexibility and adapting quickly to changes in priority, in an AGILE-like framework
  • Previous experience working in the research or life science industries
  • Knowledge of human genetics, genomics, and/or drug discovery - or are interested in learning about these topics
  • Interest in promoting your work and the ways we have solved complex challenges
  • Experience working with knowledge graphs and graph databases
