The Post

We have an exciting opportunity for a committed and dedicated information compliance professional to join our vibrant and expanding team at the heart of the University. The role will have a key focus on collaboration and providing guidance related to information compliance matters - if this is an area that you are passionate about and want to enhance your skills further, then we would be delighted to hear from you!

As the Information Governance & Compliance Officer, you will work with colleagues across the institution on matters associated with information governance, promoting best practice. You will hold and further develop expert knowledge in information governance legislation including but not limited to the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), Data Protection Act 2018, Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 and the Environmental Information (Scotland) Regulations 2004.

You will bring strong interpersonal skills, excellent attention to detail and will have experience of reviewing and summarising complex information from a variety of sources and presenting the information in the most effective formats.

You will work closely with the Information Governance Manager, Head of Policy & Planning and the Deputy Secretary.

Working with the Information Governance Manager, you will provide specialist advice and support to enable the University to comply with information governance requirements including data protection and Freedom of Information legislation.

Description of Duties

  • Apply specialist professional knowledge and expertise to advise on data protection compliance and in particular the requirements under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018
  • Develop and update data protection policy, procedures and guidance to ensure they continue to meet current legal requirements
  • Inform and deliver briefings and training to the University community to improve awareness, understanding and compliance with information governance legislation
  • Apply specialist knowledge in the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 and the Environmental Information (Scotland) Regulation 2004
  • Work with colleagues across the University to locate and retrieve information required to respond to requests. This includes influencing up to the most senior levels of the organisation
  • Prepare responses to requests including identifying relevant exemptions as appropriate, utilising effective and informed judgement. Applying the public interest test to decisions as appropriate

Essential Criteria

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Experience in the application of information governance legislation with an understanding of data protection and freedom of information legislation
  • Experience of reviewing and summarising complex information from a variety of sources and presenting the information in the most effective formats
  • Experience of working independently and proactively, with limited supervision, to resolve complex issues and complete tasks and projects
