Almost all bacteria secrete toxins to antagonize competitors and/or to promote survival. One such system is the type six secretion system (T6SS). T6SSs are best known for mediating interbacterial killing and likely facilitate dominance in a range of niches.

We invite applications for a Postdoctoral research associate position on a BBSRC grant. We seek an enthusiastic PhD scientist. You will work with members of Dr Allsopp’s and Professor Jane Davies’ Groups. This is a multidisciplinary research team with fundamental/clinical members.

Purpose of the Post

You will work full-time on specific projects building on recent publications in

Nucleic Acid Research/Frontiers in Microbiology plus supervising a small team and overseeing the laboratory.

RpoN/Sfa2-dependent activation of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa H2-T6SS and its cognate arsenal of antibacterial toxins - PubMed (nih.gov)

Diversity and prevalence of type VI secretion system effectors in clinical Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates - PubMed (nih.gov)

Duties/responsibilities

You will

  • Identify suitable methodologies for the collection and analysis of data
  • Ensuring the validity/reliability of data
  • Use molecular biology, bacteriological, biochemical, regulatory and cellular biology approaches
  • Present findings to collaborators/colleagues/conferences
  • Take initiative in the planning of research
  • Project management and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Maintain highly organised/accurate records
  • Undertake appropriate scientific and professional training
  • Promote an energetic and positive environment
  • Submit publications to leading journals and to attract external research funding as well as contribute to teaching activities at Imperial College.

Essential requirements

  • A PhD in microbiology, host-pathogen interactions or biochemistry, or a closely related area
  • Evidence of performing research relevant area
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience of effective teamwork and/or supervision
  • Published your research in relevant and refereed journal(s)
  • The ability to work on your own initiative
  • Knowledge of research methods and statistical procedures
  • Ability to review recent literature and apply new concepts
  • Organisational/time management/computer skills

Further Information

The post is full time and fixed-term contract for 24 months with renewal potential.

Candidates not yet awarded PhD will be appointed initially as Research Assistant (£40,694 - £43,888 per annum.)
