Job summary

The purpose of the role is to manage the Imperial Venture Mentoring Service (IVMS) and oversee Experts-in-Residence (XiR) , two of Imperial College London’s flagship entrepreneurial coaching and mentoring services. Since 2017, IVMS ventures have raised over £70m in funding and obtained places on accelerators such as Y Combinator, Techstars, and Entrepreneur First.

You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of IVMS as well as overseeing the day-to-day operations of the complementary XiR service.

You will get to forge new paths for both IVMS and XiR. Working with serial entrepreneurs, C-suite individuals, and sector specialists, you will gain a keen understanding of how coaching and mentoring entrepreneurs works synergistically with formal entrepreneurial programmes.

You will be a member of the Enterprise Lab Team, which has a remit across the College to provide services for staff, students, alumni, and companies based in Imperial’s White City Incubator, and will have line management responsibility for the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Coordinator.

Since 2012, Imperial student startups have raised over £575m in grant and venture capital, creating employment for over 4,500 FTE. Since 2019, over 40 IP staff spinout companies have been created, raising over £80m, and providing employment for over 500 FTE.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Manage the Imperial Venture Mentoring Service, including recruitment, relationship management, delivery, and evaluation.
  • Co-manage the pipeline of potential applicants, selection of participants and delivery of activities associated with IVMS and XiR.
  • Manage the operational relationship between the IVMS and XiR services.

Essential requirements

Education

  • Undergraduate level degree
  • Evidence of appropriate continuous professional development.

Experience and Knowledge

  • Experience working in innovation and entrepreneurship support or experience managing coaching and mentoring programmes at a level suitable to facilitate credibility with staff, post docs, students, alumni, and external partners.
  • Experience in project management and delivery; engaging complex groups of suppliers, colleagues, and collaborators.
  • Experience in line management, with the ability to lead, influence and motivate. 

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills from entry-level student to board level.
  • Well-developed organisation, coordination, and facilitation skills with a strong, delivery focus.
  • Successful at working in an informal team environment, as well as within a formal structure.
  • Effective communication skills, written and verbal.

The College is currently trialling a Work Location Framework Hybrid working may be considered for this role and the role holder may be expected to work 60% or more of their time onsite, with 40% the minimum time spent onsite. The opportunity for hybrid working will be discussed at interview.
