Director of Faculty

University of Sussex – Professional and Technical Services

The University of Sussex is looking to appoint to a new role of Director of Faculty Professional and Technical Services. From Sussex’s beginnings over 60 years ago, its distinctive ethos has informed its work. The University set out to disrupt traditional ways of creating and organising knowledge and, in doing so, developed its own distinctive identity which fostered a strong sense of community and purpose. Under the leadership of Professor Sasha Roseneil, Vice-Chancellor and President since summer 2022, the University is introducing a new academic structure, with the establishment of four Faculties (Media, Arts & Humanities; Social Sciences; Science, Engineering & Medicine; and Business). Alongside this restructuring comes the introduction of a senior professional and technical services role, aimed at streamlining operations and support across the whole University.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the new Director of Faculty Professional and Technical Services will work closely with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost and other members of the senior leadership team in supporting the successful introduction of the Faculty structure. They will be tasked with driving efficiency and consistency across all Faculty operations, and ensuring there is an effective interface between academics and professional services, and between faculties and central professional services teams. As a key member of the Professional Services Leadership Team, they will have a critical role in ensuring the smooth-functioning of processes in support of the academic endeavour across the institution. The role will line-manage the four Heads of Professional Services (one in each Faculty) and a Associate Director of Technical Operations.

Strong candidates will bring a proven track-record of significant operational and strategic leadership, probably gained in a Higher Education context. They will be experts in process and change, and will be able to demonstrate long-term strategic thinking. The ideal candidate will be a strong relationship builder who works well in partnership, and who can move seamlessly between the four faculties and understand and support the individual needs of each. They will bring a good understanding of how universities work and a good grasp of the complex interdependencies at play. This is a fantastic opportunity to take a fresh look at the delivery of professional and technical services in an ambitious and progressive university, and to play a pivotal role in key strategic and transformational projects.

This is a major leadership role and a unique opportunity to support the establishment of new academic structure at the University of Sussex, and to contribute to the wider development of Professional Services in the University.

The closing date for all applications, which should be in the form of a CV and cover letter and addressed to sussexdirector@minervasearch.com is Friday 26th January 2024.

The University of Sussex is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion and through this appointment process it is the Council’s clear stated aim to develop candidate pools that include applicants from all backgrounds and communities. The University particularly welcomes applications from women, people from black and minority ethnic communities, the LGBT+ community and from disabled people.
