The Wolfson School provides a prestigious and inclusive environment for research, with a thriving doctoral community. Renowned for impactful research with global benefits, we rank 62nd worldwide in Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering (QS, 2023).
Our research has achieved a 100% 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent' rating (REF, 2021). PhD students at Wolfson receive generous additional funds to support individual development, including the opportunity to attend conferences and training programs.
The School is one of the largest engineering schools of its kind in the UK, comprising 130 academic staff, 50+ research staff, 170+ PhD students and 66 technical and support staff. The Wolfson School’s studentship competition offers the chance for UK and International applicants interested in undertaking a PhD to have their full-time studies paid for, including a generous stipend.
Studentships are for three years and provide a tax-free stipend of £18,622 per annum for the duration of the studentship plus university tuition fees.
Studentships will be awarded on a competitive basis to applicants who have applied to advertised projects starting with the reference ‘SA24’.

Successful applicants will normally have an undergraduate honours degree with a minimum classification of a 2.1, or equivalent, in a relevant subject for the PhD topic.
A relevant master’s degree and/or experience would be advantageous.
