The University of Bristol is seeking to make three new appointments to Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Data Science. You will join an existing group of 20 academic colleagues already engaged in data science research and in teaching on our family of three data science MSc degrees, alongside another 100 academic colleagues within the University’s School of Engineering Maths and Technology (SEMT).
The University is investing £500M in building a new campus in central Bristol, and from 2024 it will host the new £220M UK National AI Supercomputer facility. Appointed candidates will contribute to our teaching in data science and should complement our interdisciplinary research culture in one of the three broad domains: data science for psychiatry and mental health-care; data-intensive computational neuroscience; and/or data science for economics/finance.
You will join a vibrant and intensive research environment within the University, which was ranked fifth for research in the 2021 UK Research Excellence Framework.
What will you be doing?
You will be expected to generate high-quality research outputs individually, and/or with postgraduate students, and/or with academic colleagues in Bristol and/or at other universities in the UK and beyond.
You should have a demonstrable potential to secure research funding, including through engagement with industry and other external partners.
You will be expected to contribute to the effective running of the School by undertaking academic administration and leadership roles as specified by the Head of School; and to take an active role in providing high quality and innovative teaching and assessment by contributing to one or more of our degree programmes in MSc Data Science, MSc Financial Technology with Data Science, and/or MSc Economics with Data Science.
You should also be an engaged personal tutor and/or project-supervisor to our undergraduate and postgraduate taught students.
You should apply if
You should be comfortable working in teams of various sizes, and in leading such a team when the time is right.
You should have experience of teaching a range of topics in data science, or demonstrate a clear commitment to doing so.
You will have a recognised strong research track-record in data-intensive research: either in core data science R&D, or in the application of data science tools and techniques to one or more challenging research issues.
You will be expected to provide input to the overall strategic vision and ambition for the School, and to feed into the Faculty’s strategy discussions.
You should be willing to develop and/or demonstrate leadership skills, allowing you to effectively work collaboratively with groups of internal and external partners, and with the ability to act as a role model to our students and to other staff.
For informal queries please contact Professor Dave Cliff (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Interviews are anticipated to be held on 1st March 2024.
