The successful applicant will be expected to contribute fully to high-quality teaching and administration within the Department of History and to pursue research in their area of specialism to the highest standards in order to enhance the international research profile of the Department, the School of Humanities, and the Faculty of Arts. The successful applicant will be a specialist in any aspect of the history of health, broadly conceived, before 1900, and in any geographical area. We also encourage applications from scholars of the history of disability. The successful applicant will ideally be able to start on August 1 or as soon as possible thereafter.
What will you be doing?
You will work further to develop an established research profile through publication, bidding for external research funding and presenting your research at national and international conferences. You will play an active role in maintaining and enhancing the research profile of the Department, School and Faculty and in generating wide ranging impact. You will also be expected, after appropriate training and mentoring, to supervise postgraduate research students. To this end, you will be expected to develop and keep up-to-date with scholarship in the relevant fields of teaching and research.
You will design and deliver units on the history of health at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as units related to your period and area specialism. You will contribute to team-taught units, and, where appropriate, to School and Faculty programmes and initiatives.
You will take an active part in departmental, School, and Faculty administrative and decision-making processes as appropriate, and will be expected to develop an understanding of University structures, policies, and procedures necessary to fulfil those roles effectively.
You should apply if
1) You have completed a PhD in the history of health by the end of July 2024; have a record of publication and well-developed plans for future research publication in this field; and have demonstrated clear potential to achieve international excellence in research and to attract external research funding. You may also have plans to achieve impact and public engagement with your research.
2) You have a proven track record of teaching history, at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, and potentially also of teaching other units related to your specialism. You have completed an HEA-accredited teaching qualification or have clear plans to do so.
3) You have some administrative experience of working in Higher Education.
