Research Associate in Galaxy Cluster Astrophysics

University of Bristol - Astrophysics

Location: Bristol
Salary: £37,099 to £41,732 per annum, Grade I
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 1st February 2024
Closes: 5th March 2024
Job Ref: ACAD107379

The role

Applications are invited to a Postdoctoral Research Associate position, working in the study of the X-ray properties of clusters of galaxies with Prof. Ben Maughan at the University of Bristol. The position is full-time open-ended contract, with current funding until 31st March 2027. Starting salaries range from £37,099 to £41,732 per annum depending on previous experience. There are additionally funds for travel and computing equipment.

The successful candidate will sit in the Bristol Astrophysics Group which consists of around 40 researchers, students, and support staff. The group’s research spans a range of observational, numerical, and theoretical topics from exoplanets to extra-galactic astrophysics and cosmology. We are a diverse and friendly group and welcome candidates from all backgrounds.

What will you be doing?

The project will be based primarily on using data from the eROSITA All Sky Survey to measure the X-ray emission from clusters of galaxies detected by Euclid, in order to infer the properties of the intra-cluster medium (ICM). Advanced statistical techniques will be used to constrain ICM properties in the limit of weak or null X-ray detections associated with the Euclid clusters. The analysis will be run at large scale on the hundreds of thousands of clusters detected by Euclid, and the statistics of the population and correlations between cluster properties at different wavelengths will be used to test and refine models of astrophysical feedback.

You should apply if

We encourage applications from those interested in the analysis of X-ray observations of clusters of galaxies and statistical modelling of cluster populations. It is expected that the applicant will have a PhD (or that their viva/defence is already scheduled) prior to starting the position. Informal enquiries (not applications) can be made to Prof. Ben Maughan (ben.maughan@bristol.ac.uk).

Please submit a cover letter describing how your skills and experience would prepare you for this role, a CV, and research statement including information on your previous and current research. The research statement and cover letter should be no more than 2 pages each. Please also provide information for two referees who can comment on your research record and potential.
