This full-time fixed term post is available within the Quantum Device Modelling group for two years with a possibility to extend it further until 31 March 2027.
You will undertake research on European Innovation Council (EIC) Pathfinder Open project “ATYPIQUAL” to assist the Principal Investigator and project partners in the successful execution of the project. ATYPIQUAL’s main aim is to unveil a room temperature quantum technology platform based on a novel generation of atomically precise graphene nanoribbons. You will be based at the University of Warwick and be involved in a highly interdisciplinary consortium with experimental collaborators from academia and industry including EMPA in Switzerland, TU Delft in the Netherlands, TU Dresden in Germany, and CNRS and THALES in France.
You will undertake independent and collaborative research on the theory and modelling of electronic and magnetic properties of graphene nanoribbons, quantum transport through them between electrodes, and will be expected to write up your research for publication. You will be expected to deal with any management/administration matters that may arise from the project and produce and present regular project reports ensuring that the project objectives and deadlines are met. You will be expected to co-supervise PhD and MSc students within the group.

We will consider applications for employment on a part-time or other flexible working basis, even where a position is advertised as full-time, unless there are operational or other objective reasons why it is not possible to do so.
You will have a PhD in a relevant discipline (Condensed Matter Theory, Atomistic Modelling of Materials, Computational Chemistry, Theoretical Nanoscience or a closely related field), with a strong A level (or equivalent) in Physics, Chemistry or Engineering. A track record of publication in high ranked journal(s) is essential.
You should be able to demonstrate strong computational modelling capabilities using first principle methods (e.g.: density functional theory), and expertise in quantum transport calculations and programming. Expertise in quantum transport and using machine learning algorithms for first principle calculations will be distinct advantage.
You should be able to work independently and to participate creatively in refining research directions. You are expected to present the scientific results in project meetings, at national and international conferences, and publish in high-ranked peer-reviewed journals. You will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, time management and IT skills, and will be able to interact effectively with experimental collaborators.

If you are near submission or have recently submitted your PhD but have not yet had it conferred, any offers of employment will be made as Research Assistant at the top of level 5 of the University grade structure. Upon receipt of evidence of the successful award of your PhD, you will be promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of level 6 of the University grade structure.
