The University of Manchester is making a number of strategic investments in Computer Science.

We offer a Lectureship or Senior Lectureship in Natural Language Processing at the Department of Computer Science. The appointment will further strengthen the research profile of the AI/NLP and text mining research groupings at the University of Manchester and the growing activities in AI.

We are looking for an outstanding candidate that has a vision for making a significant impact on NLP research and its applications.  You should have major strengths in core natural language processing and deep learning with emphasis in one or more of these areas: natural language generation, explainable NLP, multimodal conversational AI, multimodal social media analysis etc, in various domains, including health, medicine, digital humanities, finance, etc. Ideally you will combine NLP with deep learning and software skills to complement existing strong skills in information extraction, knowledge graph construction, unsupervised methods of learning, reinforcement learning, contrastive learning applied to summarisation, simplification and biomedical text mining or other areas of interest.

The successful candidate should have the following research profile:

  • Excellent knowledge of deep learning (e.g. generative models, weakly-supervised learning, transfer learning)
  • Familiarity with machine learning libraries and NLP libraries.
  • Knowledge and understanding of pre-trained language models
  • The ability to conduct basic and independent research in NLP demonstrated by existing publications in journals and conferences such as ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, SIGIR, IJCAI, Coling, AAAI
  • The ability to write grant proposals.

The Department of Computer Science is a leading research institution, and values exceptional researchers.  You will publish to the highest standards, secure external research funding, pursue real-world impact, and contribute to the PhD training programmes within the Department.

The Department of Computer Science values exceptional teachers. You will play a key role in maintaining our reputation as an institute of learning – designing and delivering innovative UG/PG topics, both in your area of expertise and across the spectrum of Computer Science.  Exceptional teachers are encouraged to demonstrate this in their application.

Applicants should provide:

  • a full academic CV
  • a 1-page description of your vision and future research plans, with indication of how you will secure funding for research and with whom you might collaborate, both inside and outside the University
  • a one page statement on teaching, listing technical areas to which you could contribute, at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level, highlighting experience and indicating the teaching methods that you think would be appropriate
