Brunel University London was established in 1966 and is a leading multidisciplinary research-intensive technology university delivering economic, social and cultural benefits. For more information please visit: https://www.brunel.ac.uk/about/our-history/home.

After 15 years in Cambridge, the Esposito Laboratory (www.quantitative-biology.org) relocated to Brunel University, a lively campus in London close to Heathrow Airport. We have state-of-the-art facilities for advanced imaging applications, 3D printing, bioprinting, biological research, and microfluidics.

As part of the international consortium HILIGHT (www.hilighthorizon.eu), funded by the EU HORIZON, we are recruiting a Research Fellow. This is an excellent opportunity to work and be trained within a highly interdisciplinary consortium and laboratory. HILIGHT develops innovative laser and sensor technologies for the rapid and early detection of cancer.

The Esposito laboratory leads the development of imaging protocols, early hardware integration, and demonstration of biomedical research case studies which will include fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM), two-photon microscopy (TPM) and optogenetics to quantify or manipulate cell biochemistry by light. We will also support the wider activities of the consortium, particularly applications to digital histopathology together with commercial partners.

Familiarity with advanced optical instrumentation, software development, numerical simulations, and handling/preparation of biological samples is required. Proficiency with microscopy, particularly FLIM and TPM, is highly desirable. Proficiency in programming (e.g., MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW) is welcome. Availability to work across disciplines with biological samples is essential. Good communication skills and demonstrable capabilities to work both independently and as part of a team are required. The post holder must attend consortium meetings, including travelling abroad to coordinate efforts with European partners.

Applicants are expected to have a PhD in disciplines appropriate for the project (e.g., Physics, Biophysics, Biology, Engineering) or to have attained equivalent research or industrial experience. Candidates with less experience (e.g., waiting for the PhD to be granted) can apply as a Research Assistant in the first instance (read Job Descriptions (available on the university's website, accessed by the 'Apply' button)).

Priority will be given to applicants with a proven record of cross-disciplinary research. Interested candidates with a strong profile in engineering or physics who are committed to being trained for interdisciplinary research are also welcome. Preliminary inquiries are welcome (alessandro.esposito@brunel.ac.uk).

We offer a generous annual leave package plus discretionary University closure days, excellent training and development opportunities as well as a great occupational pension scheme and a range of health-related support. The University is committed to a hybrid working approach.

Closing date for applications: 10 March 2024.

Interviews will take place on Week of 18 March 2024 in person (remote options will be made available).
