The role

This role of specialist technician supports an active research group carrying out research that focuses on the neural basis of recognition memory. The position is primarily a research technician post and the successful applicant will be expected to perform experiments independently under the overall supervision of the group leader.

What will you be doing?

You would be expected to:

  • To work both independently and in a busy research team.
  • Plan, organise and carry out a range of defined behavioural tests and experiments, using specialist equipment and techniques involving work with experimental animals and post-mortem animal tissue, ensuring the requirements of the team are met and advising on any resource requirements.
  • Maintain a safe working environment in accordance with health and safety procedures.
  • Supervise students and provide instruction on the use of histology facilities.
  • Liaise with members of the animal house on a routine basis for the maintenance of the transgenic colony, and ensure the groups animals are housed within conditions as licensed by the Home Office.
  • Assist in animal perfusions and removal of brain for storage in PFA.
  • Cryostat work; prepare of frozen tissue and collection of brain slices. Appropriate staining and immunohistochemistry and coverslipping.
  • Assist with light/fluorescent microscopy and cell counting.

You should apply if

You have the following:

  • Skills in histology, particularly immunohistochemical techniques.
  • Experience of working in a laboratory setting both chemical and biochemical.
  • Organisational capabilities and high productivity
