The Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy is looking for a Technology Analyst role to join our Cambridge Royce Institute team at an exciting time. You will play a strategic and pivotal role in identifying and evaluating cutting-edge technologies and assessing the distinctiveness and impact of these technologies in comparison to the global competitive landscape. The Department is based on West Cambridge site (see https://www.msm.cam.ac.uk for further information).

This role, funded by the prestigious Henry Royce Institute, will place you at the heart of advancing materials research and innovation in the UK.

Your primary undertaking lies within the Royce Hydrogen Accelerator (RHA), a groundbreaking initiative designed to surmount materials challenges impeding the hydrogen supply chain. This initiative bridges the gap between laboratory-based materials research and the implementation of proven technologies at scale. It serves as a nexus, uniting voices from government, industry, academia, and investment.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead on the activity to seek out the best UK materials technologies to unlock the potential hydrogen has to offer to the UK and wider global energy system.
  • Strategically identify and screen the best technologies. Analyse and interrogate the technologies found, determining whether they are truly game-changing and are suitably de-risked to be proposed for an RHA (Royce Hydrogen Accelerator) Board investment decision.
  • Bring and share expertise, experience and networks to survey and connect to the UK research and technology landscape.
  • Operate with a high level of independence under the overall direction of the Royce Hydrogen Challenge Lead to enhance collaboration and engagement with the wider community
  • Assist the technologies identified to matter experts drawn from a range of backgrounds and led by an internationally recognised technology expert, which will be put in place in parallel with your arrival.

You profile:

  • Expertise in technology assessment, portfolio management, and strategy.
  • Knowledge of intellectual property rights, patenting procedures, and contracts.
  • Proven skills in stakeholder relations management.
  • Experience identifying funding opportunities and matching them with potential projects.
  • Negotiation skills with sponsors and academics for mutually beneficial projects.
  • Financial reporting, analysis, and forecasting experience.

You will be an experienced user of Microsoft Office suite and ideally have some knowledge of grant application process and financial systems. In addition, you will have excellent communication skills, have a high level of attention to detail as well as being self-motivated and able to work to tight deadlines. You should be able to work autonomously and collaboratively with the RHA network.

We operate a flexible working environment and are open to a range of contact hours and working patterns. Due to the need to foster a good understanding of the department and build relationships this role is predominantly office based.

You will have access to a clear induction plan to ensure you are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to achieve success, an annual development review to support your personal development, access to University training courses to support your ongoing learning and development and a supportive and inclusive working environment that encourages collaboration and supports wellbeing
