Professor and Director of the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre

The NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) is a £42m infrastructure award funded by the NIHR from 01 December 2022-30 November 2027, and hosted by South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with King's College London. It is based within the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience faculty. Both the Trust and KCL are part of the King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre.

We are seeking an exceptional individual with the ambition, commitment, and determination to provide leadership and strategic direction to our world-leading portfolio of experimental medicine and early phase translational research in mental health and related disorders.

Supporting a NIHR faculty of approximately 300 staff and students, the Director is responsible for mobilising and motivating the senior academic investigators leading the BRC’s ten research themes, along with core programmes in patient and public involvement and engagement and academic career development, and the Mental Health Bioresource. The Director will lead the development, evolution and delivery of the BRC’s scientific strategy, which is configured around four overarching goals, namely Whole Person Care, Translational Informatics, Precision Psychiatry and Novel therapeutics and lay the foundation for a future successful NIHR BRC funding application.

The successful applicant will lead the academic theme leads in building on the excellence of our existing NIHR Biomedical Research portfolio and attracting additional scientific funding. They will be instrumental in fostering new strategic partnerships and alliances across the wider NIHR and NHS infrastructure, life sciences, pharma and digital industries to maximize the value of NIHR investment and accelerate translation of BRC outputs and impacts for patient benefit.  

The Director will have dual reporting responsibilities; reporting into the Director of R&D at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and within the academic partner, to the Executive Dean of the host Faculty, namely the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience serving as a member of the Faculty Executive. 

They will be based at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King’s College London, where they will be expected to pursue their research. The role will include an honorary contract with the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. 

The post holder will also serve as a member of the KHP Executive Group, which is chaired by the Executive Director of King’s Health Partners. The post holder will be expected to work closely with the R&D Directors from across the partners.

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent

Key responsibilities

  • Strategic leadership of the BRC, driving innovation and impact
  • Oversight and management of Centre governance, including reporting and financial, according to contractual obligations
  • Embed health equity, equality, diversity and inclusion and patient and public involvement and engagement into activities and decision-making
  • Steer interdisciplinary capacity building to support the development of a new generation of research leaders within a diverse and inclusive research culture
  • Establish and develop strategic partnerships to strengthen academic capacity across the UK and maximise the benefit of the NIHR Maudsley BRC to patients and the public
  • Identify strategic opportunities to add value through relevant infrastructure and scientific funding, with an emphasis on collaboration across the wider NIHR family
  • Work with Theme Leads, our partner Trusts, the University, patients, public and strategic partners to meet the BRC objectives and develop the strategy for the next BRC competition
  • Work closely with the newly established KHP Translational Medicine Centre to ensure synergy between the BRC and the wider research efforts within King’s Health Partners
  • Contribute to the broader life of the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience and King’s Health Partners as a member of the senior Faculty
  • Provide high-level research leadership in mental health
  • Develop and maintain own research portfolio, attracting funds, growing a team and producing and disseminating world-leading, internationally excellent outputs in line with expectations of Chair level appointments at an institute of the IoPPN’s standing
  • The appointee will also be expected to take on an honorary contract with the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, consistent with his or her specialisation and experience. Contribution to service delivery via provision of clinical sessions/PAs as agreed with the Trust Chief Medical Officer

Skills, knowledge, and experience

The Director will have an international reputation for their academic work in a field relevant to mental health, proven leadership skills and an exceptional track record in experimental medicine and translational research. As a KCL Professor, they will provide high level academic research leadership and contribute to undergraduate and post graduate teaching and clinical training and collaborate with other researchers and colleagues across King’s. The post-holder will also be a practising clinician at NHS consultant level.

Essential criteria

  1. Medical degree AND higher postgraduate research degree i.e. PhD or equivalent.
  2. Full GMC registration relevant postgraduate training and qualification in psychiatry (candidates from outside the UK should contact the GMC and Royal College of Psychiatrists to provide evidence that they will meet these criteria).
  3. Research leader of international standing with recognised vision, knowledge and experience, an outstanding track record in highly interdisciplinary and innovative translational research and /or experimental medicine and the ability to lead and influence internal and external stakeholders.
  4. Ability to create, manage, maintain, and grow high performing teams and foster strategic alliances.
  5. Robust understanding of UK Government policies, the NHS, and the UK Life Sciences sector,
  6. A successful candidate would be expected to meet professorial standards at King’s College London.
  7. Ability to communicate complex and challenging issues to a broad range of audiences and stakeholder groups.
  8. Ability to attract and manage significant research funding and develop strategic interdisciplinary research initiatives, while accountable to stakeholder partners.
  9. Experience of, and commitment to, developing an inclusive, collaborative, and diverse research culture.
  10. Excellence in early career development, research degree supervision and mentoring.
  11. Commitment to working alongside patients and the public in research.
  12. Strong personal values that align with those of King’s College London and the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and the ability to model these.
