Lady Margaret Hall (LMH) invites applications for The Clive Holmes Fellowship in History, a Fixed-Term Fellowship in US History (post-1776). Although applications from specialists in any time-period after 1776 will be eligible, the College wishes to appoint a candidate whose core interests lie in political, religious, or intellectual history. The post will be tenable for a fixed term of six years from 1 September 2024 and is non-renewable. The Fellowship is intended for candidates who are between early and mid-career stages in their academic life.

Teaching 

  • Organising and delivering the teaching of LMH undergraduates for eight hours (unweighted) per week.
  • Liaising with and being responsible to Governing Body alongside the two permanent Tutorial Fellows in History.
  • Meeting undergraduates at the start of each term to confirm arrangements for the term’s work.   
  • Setting and marking Collections (internal College exams). 
  • Writing end of term reports on the performance of your undergraduates.
  • Supervising undergraduate dissertations.
  • Acting as personal tutor for one of the undergraduate year groups.
  • Liaising with other Fellows and Lecturers in History and with joint schools in History, as well as with the Senior Tutor as regards the teaching of your undergraduates. 
  • Attending annual Principal’s Collections for undergraduates.
  • Taking a full part in the annual undergraduate admissions exercise. 
  • Taking part in College Open Days and any other schools liaison/Access activities
  • Recommending books for purchase by the College Library.
  • Attending Schools dinners, and other College events and College History events with both students and alumni.

Research

  • Building an international research profile.
  • Conducting and publishing high-quality research.
  • Acting as College Advisor to postgraduates

The successful applicant will meet the following criteria

  • Strong educational background, with a good first degree in History or an equivalent qualification (essential). 
  • In possession of a doctorate in History.
  • Ability to teach US History. Candidates can read more about the structure of the Oxford undergraduate syllabus, and the nature of the courses you would teach, on the Oxford History Faculty website: https//www.history.ox.ac.uk/ba-history. 
  • Ability to supervise undergraduate dissertations within the American field.  
  • Willingness to offer more tailored teaching for Visiting Students.
  • Flexibility and an ability to work as part of a team.
  • Willingness to undertake, and aptitude for, the pastoral welfare of students supported by the subject Fellows and College’s Wellbeing Team. 
  • Experience of teaching (essential).
  • Possess a high level of research ability in the field (essential).
  • Have a coherent proposed research programme for the duration of the Fellowship, of a standard which will contribute to and enhance the national and international profile of the field in the University.
  • Have a record of publications and other output demonstrating research expertise in the field, appropriate to the career stage of the applicant.

The salary for this post will be £36,024 to £44,263 with discretionary range to £48,350 per annum (University Grade 7) at current rates. You will also have access to a number of generous benefits.
