The Role

This role relates to a new, industrial-collaborative project which aims to develop high-power HTPEM fuel cells for application in commercial aviation.  The role will entail development, laboratory-based testing and characterisation of advanced MEA and stack components for the lead partner's novel HTPEM technology, including development and application of advanced in-situ electrochemical characterisation techniques such as spatially-resolved electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (SR-EIS). 

As Research Fellow within the Centre for E-Mobility and Clean Growth you will undertake and play a lead role in the delivery of impactful research. Developing and identifying new research objectives, proposals, and impact activities for your own or joint research, while contributing to REF impact rated nationally/internationally excellent.

You will apply innovative research methods and extend the research portfolio including the publication of your research results and outcomes. Building internal and external networks for the exchange of information and future collaboration, sharing information, and identifying potential sources of funds will play a key part of this role. Contributing to teaching, learning and development programmes as appropriate, you will use research findings to inform curriculum development while assisting in the development of student research skills.

Qualifications Required

You should have or be near obtaining a PhD related to electrochemistry, fuel cells or electrolysers and be able to demonstrate relevant expertise in electrochemical diagnostics and modelling.

Our Successful Candidate 

A highly motivated and experienced Research Fellow with demonstrable expert knowledge and understanding of hydrogen fuel cell and/or electrolyser technologies, including experience contributing to the innovation and development of the field.  An Advanced knowledge of research methods and techniques with demonstrable adherence to all regulations, you will have the ability to develop research objectives, projects, and proposals for own and joint research. 

Research sufficient to write up research and produce excellent, high-quality publications in high profile peer reviewed journals and present at national/international events, you will be committed to working collaboratively on research development, delivery and dissemination including interdisciplinary or cross-disciplinary research, public engagement, and knowledge exchange. Prior experience or demonstrable expertise in HTPEM fuel cells, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and in-situ testing of MEAs would be advantageous. 

Under the line management supervision and guidance of Prof Oliver Curnick, and in close collaboration with project partners, you will contribute to research and consultancy activity, prepare reports and deliverables within the project. In addition, you will gain valuable exposure to the Centre’s research, including the submission of funding bids with support from your line manager
