The Department of Physics, School of Science, Loughborough University is seeking to appoint a Research Associate (RA) to work on the project “Quantum reservoir computing for efficient signal processing”. The project is funded by the Horizon Pathfinder (EU) and UKRI Horison Europe guarantee (UK) programmes (2024-2026). It is an international collaboration between experimental and theoretical research groups and industrial partners in the UK and EU.

The rapid development of Quantum Technologies 2.0 over the last two decades - especially in quantum communication, simulation and computation - has pushed this field into the mainstream of technological innovation, with the expectation of major economic impacts. While universal quantum computing is the stated Holy Grail of Quantum Technologies 2.0, its implementation on a scale necessary to practically solve high impact problems remains elusive for current, or feasible in the near-term, technologies.

Our project is focused on approach that would allow the development of practically useful quantum computing devices, based on existing technology. In Quantum Reservoir Computing (QRC) the input signal is mapped on the state of the reservoir - a fixed quantum system whose output is used to train a classical neural network. It has a massively greater space of states compared to a classical reservoir with the same number of unit elements. Moreover, unlike a classical reservoir, a QR can accept quantum, rather than classical, inputs, and produce quantum outputs. 

The RA will play a major role in the theoretical component of the project. The RA will build theoretical and numerical models of realistic small-to-medium scale quantum reservoirs based on superconducting and defects-in-SiC qubits, investigate their behaviour and develop experimental protocols for testing their performance. In this project the researcher will closely collaborate with the teams from Loughborough and several leading European research institutions (https://www.linkedin.com/groups/14393078/).   

The post will be based at Loughborough University but will entail visits to other members of the consortium. The successful applicant will be a researcher with a PhD in Physics or another STEM discipline of relevance to the project, and proven post-PhD experience in the field of theoretical quantum physics, quantum optics, quantum electronics, condensed matter theory or related areas. The RA's main responsibilities will be to conduct quantitative research and contribute to the analysis, dissemination and exploitation of the results.
