About us

The BBSRC funded PSIPRED Web Server project is aimed at exploring applications of the recently developed amino acid covariation techniques and language models in predicting aspects of protein structure and function. A particular emphasis is in accelerating methods already available via the online PSIPRED protein workbench. The principle objective will be to explore key developments in the underpinning algorithms, tackling both the issue of needing very large numbers of homologous sequences and possible embeddings to produce viable predictive models. After this the next objective is to use this insight to explore using protein and amino acid embeddings to replace sequence search for a number of key machine learning algorithms currently available via our web services. A final objective will involve developing new methods for rapid structural analysis for presentation via our website.

About the role

The Bioinformati! cs Group in the Department of Computer Science invites applications for a BBSRC funded postdoctoral research associate position. The main duties will be to carry out novel machine learning (deep learning) experiments on bioinformatics problems of interest to the lab, particularly in the area of structural bioinformatics. The project also entails taking responsibility for further developing learning algorithms available via the Web-based PSIPRED Workbench. Duties will be to build and document new software to improve the effectiveness of our existing web server infrastructure, to integrate and develop new software tools developed within the group, and to coordinate user support and training activities.

About you

Applicants should have (or very soon expect to have) a relevant PhD (e.g. in bioinformatics) and ideally at least one paper accepted in a refereed scientific journal, though candidates without a PhD may be considered if there is evidence of extensive directly ! relevant experience. Good programming skills in Python are essential. Experience of developing and/or maintaining standalone deep learning software applications is desirable, along with experience of PyTorch. Fluency in both written and spoken English is essential. Familiarity with deep learning applied to protein structure-related bioinformatics would be advantageous.
