Job description

Join King’s College London, a renowned institution at the forefront of ground-breaking research. An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Research Management & Innovation Directorate for the position of Research Infrastructure Supplier Manager. This role will work to ensure best value and promote a culture of sustainability in relation to the purchase of scientific equipment and associated service agreements from key suppliers at King’s.

The post holder will work closely with the research community and central teams (Procurement, Estates & Facilities) to raise awareness of compliant routes to market for scientific equipment and to identify opportunities for synergies and cost saving. 

This is a brand-new post and the role holder will have a real opportunity to impact and financial sustainability of research infrastructure at King’s. 

The successful candidate will have work experience in a laboratory environment or similar and be able to demonstrate how they would identify opportunities for cost saving and improved purchasing efficiency. They will have experience of negotiating high value agreements (+£1m) with external suppliers and be highly skilled in developing and maintaining relationships through professional networks. 

This is a hybrid role (remote working /onsite working) and it is expected that the post holder may, at times, spend up to two days a week on campus in order to understand and relate their work to the day-to-day onsite research operations at King’s.

This post will be offered on a fixed term contract for 2 years.

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential Criteria

  • Purchasing Expertise - Demonstrated experience in strategic purchasing, particularly in the acquisition of scientific equipment and associated service agreements, with a proven ability to secure excellent value and negotiate favourable terms with key suppliers. 
  • Financial Acumen - Strong financial management skills with the ability to manage budgets, analyse financial awards, identify cost-saving opportunities and demonstrate awareness of financial sustainability. 
  • Project Management - Track record of setting up and managing projects effectively, ensuring successful execution and delivery with measurable success metrics that demonstrate impact. 
  • Stakeholder Collaboration - Exceptional collaboration and engagement skills, fostering relationships with academics, researchers, technical teams and other key stakeholders. 
  • Technical Understanding - Background and work experience in a laboratory environment or similar, demonstrating a solid understanding of scientific equipment, technologies and equipment procurement. 
  • Record Management - Strong organisational skills with the ability to maintain accurate records of financial awards, equipment, and service agreements. 
  • Communication Skills - Excellent written and verbal communication skills, essential for collaboration, training, creating supporting content and conveying complex technical information to a diverse audience. 
  • Hybrid Work Adaptability - Experience managing a hybrid work model, balancing remote and onsite work effectively.
  • Sustainability Focus - Commitment to sustainability and environmental considerations in scientific equipment procurement, with experience integrating sustainability into procurement processes and decision-making. 
  • Training and Development - Experience developing and providing training and support content to upskill a wider community in equipment acquisition.
