Job Summary

This Research Associate post is funded by a UK Acoustics Network Plus (https://acoustics.ac.uk/) Pilot Project grant to investigate the feasibility of developing and deploying biodegradable microphones for autonomous monitoring of biodiversity[1].

The post is hosted in the Ecosystem Sensing lab in Imperial-X / Department of Life Sciences, led by Dr. Sarab Sethi (www.imperial.ac.uk/people/sarab.sethi).

This role is ideal for a candidate looking for a short opportunity to conduct high-impact research at the cutting-edge of biodiversity monitoring.

Duties and responsibilities

You will apply machine learning algorithms to large corpuses of eco-acoustic data and investigate how varying audio parameters and/or sampling strategies affects the derived biodiversity metrics. Furthermore, you will lead or contribute significantly to small scale field trials of novel eco-acoustic sensing technologies.

From the outputs of the simulations and field trials you will lead or contribute significantly to the submission of a manuscript to a peer reviewed journal.

Essential requirements

  • Hold, or be near completion of, a PhD in ecology, engineering, maths, or a closely related discipline
  • Experience programming in Python
  • Experience using or developing machine learning algorithms
  • Practical experience within a research environment and / or publication in relevant and refereed journals

Further Information

This is a full-time, fixed-term contract for up to 4 months. You will be based across South Kensington Campus and White City Campus. We except the successful candidate to be in post by 23 March 2024 at the latest.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant.
