The Opportunity:

We are looking for a highly skilled and enthusiastic Facility Manager to oversee the effective operation of the Mass Spectrometry (MS) Facility in the School of Chemistry. The facility supports a wide range of research within the School, and houses a diverse range of MS instrumentation with a particular strength in FT-ICR MS. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in MS and related techniques, and have experience in using a range of MS instrument platforms.  They will also have responsibility for running the facility in a financially sustainable way through careful management of pricing, charging, procurement and commercial activities.

Working closely with other members of the facility, the Facility Manager will oversee the training of researchers in the operation of MS instruments, including data collection, analysis, and interpretation. The successful candidate will play a key part in the strategic development of the facility by identifying and contributing to successful funding bids, contributing to collaborative research projects, and offering technical advice to members of the School at all levels.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • BSc or MSc or PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or closely related subject.
  • Proven experience of working in a collaborative research setting.
  • Established expertise in mass spectrometry. Hands-on experience with a range of mass spectrometry instrumentation and chromatographic techniques. The ideal candidate will have experience using FT-ICR MS.
  • Experience of developing or implementing new mass spectrometry protocols and approaches.
  • Experience working in a facility environment with knowledge of both the technical and operational requirements (including staff and budget management).
  • Self-motivated, with the able to work independently and collaboratively. Excellent communication, teamworking and organisation skills.
