Are you a communicator looking for an opportunity to make a difference?

We are seeking a well organised professional to join the Department of Global Health and Infection at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) at the University of Sussex as our FLIGHT Business Development Manager.

The FLIGHT (Framework for Leveraging Innovation in Global Health Technologies) programme aims to develop a framework for translational health research and commercial development for global health activities. FLIGHT, a collaboration between the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and BSMS, is one of 14 successful projects in the latest round of Research England’s Connecting Capability Fund / Research England Development Fund awards. This government initiative provides funding for collaborations between universities and with private sector partners to achieve more effective research commercialisation.

The FLIGHT Business Development Manager will contribute to the FLIGHT programme and will deliver BSMS-focused business development activity, alongside partner FLIGHT managers at LSTM and LSHTM. Specifically, the role will deliver day-to-day aspects of the BSMS-centred FLIGHT programme, including liaison and co-ordination with the University of Sussex Innovation and Business Partnerships (IBP) team, wider HEI and partner FLIGHT teams. They will work under the direction of the FLIGHT Programme Lead and IBP to deliver the KPIs and outcomes of the programme. The role will be an externally facing position, liaising and collaborating with wider innovation partners in both the UK and LMICs in order to enhance the innovation portfolio at BSMS. The FLIGHT Business Development Manager will foster strong links with Knowledge Exchange, Legal and Academic colleagues to contribute to innovation policy, achieving the strategic objectives and KPIs of the project, thereby supporting the broader impact goals of BSMS.

In this exciting role you will:

  • Work on the FLIGHT programme with colleagues at Sussex, in close collaboration with LSTM and LSHTM FLIGHT teams with the goal of maximising the impact of Sussex global health research and expertise in the local community, the economy and wider society.
  • Support BSMS Global Health and Infection academic staff with knowledge exchange activities, including public engagement.
  • Work closely with the School’s Business Partnerships Manager to maximise the University’s Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) results through proactively building income-generating relationships between academics and external organisations.
  • Work closely with the wider university IBP team, using their customer relationship management tools and processes and attend their weekly meetings where you will update on FLIGHT activities.
  • Work with the School’s Director of Research and Knowledge Exchange and Research Manager to support global health-facing public engagement.
  • Represent and champion the school and its world-leading research and expert capability when liaising between external, non-academic organisations (such as businesses, charities and public sector bodies) and the University.
