The School of Science and Engineering has an international reputation for excellent teaching and topical research, particularly in addressing global challenges in energy, the environment, health care, technology, forensic science and infrastructure.

The Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science is a 10 year £10 Million project with the remit to disrupt positively the current forensic science ecosystem. As a key appointment in the £10m Leverhulme Research Centre we are recruiting for a Senior Research Engineer in Virtual and Extended Reality within our team to work on innovative, inter-disciplinary research and engage in the development of collaborative research activities. This is a fixed-term appointment until 30 June 2026, in the first instance.

We are exploring the application opportunities presented by virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) and their potential to profoundly impact the forensic science space particularly in the area of crime scene investigation.

We are seeking an individual with a proven track record in interdisciplinary research and success in the development of innovative solutions to complex problems within the VR/AR domain. You will need to be able to think imaginatively and explore and develop novel solutions for complex problems and scenarios.

Your priorities will include:

  • Develop and lead innovative and exciting research ideas in Augmented/Mixed/Virtual reality.
  • Lead the dissemination of results and methodologies through peer reviewed journals, publications, workshops and presentations at conferences.
  • Communicate and lead discussions around scientific knowledge and VR to expert and non-expert audiences.
  • Lead the development of new workflows for exploring and implementing improvements in VR/AR that deliver measurable outputs.
  • Lead the interaction with national and international stakeholders, including the judiciary, forensic science practitioners, academics, law enforcement, industrial innovators, and entrepreneurs.

Who we’re looking for:

  • Evidence of leadership in knowledge and practical application of the development and delivery of VR/AR
  • Highly evolved communication skills both orally and in writing at all levels on complex and specialised issues.
  • Demonstrable project management and delivery.
  • Confident and engaging presenter who can inspire others.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure external research or industry support (in kind or funding).
