Job description

The Department of Film Studies seeks to make TWO appointments at Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Film Studies. We are especially interested in candidates with expertise in one or more of following areas: Global South (Africa, Middle East, South Asia and Latin America), New Media (including but not limited to AI, platform studies, algorithmic media, online, mobile media, digital culture, and participatory culture), Television, and Film/Media Practice as Research. We seek applicants who will bring theoretical and/or historical/archival approaches to these areas of research.

These exciting new posts will contribute to the excellent research profile of the department while also engaging in teaching, leadership roles, and pastoral support across our expanding portfolio of courses. This includes the BA Film Studies and Postgraduate program in Film Studies (including the Film-Philosophy Pathway). Applicants will be committed to exploring new, and inclusive, methods of research and pedagogy.

We seek applicants who can contribute to our goals of delivering innovative, inclusive, and socially-engaged education, and the ongoing diversification and decolonisation of our curriculum. In keeping with the department’s strategic priorities of inclusivity, sustainability, care, and reflexivity, applicants’ research and teaching should demonstrate a commitment to these goals.

Film Studies is distinctive in its commitment to interdisciplinarity, and the position requires teaching across a broad range of areas. Indicatively, the new posts will lead or contribute to teaching compulsory modules, including Introduction to Film Studies; Critical Debates; Research and Scholarship; Film History and Film Theory modules; Film and New Media (BA level); and Formations of Film Studies, and London Film Cultures (MA level). Applicants pursuing Film/Media Practice as Research, should be able to offer and contribute to modules such as Introduction to Creative and Curatorial Practice; Introduction to Filmmaking; Sound in Cinema; Digital Media Practice (BA level); and Critical Media Practice (MA level). They will also supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Film Studies or Film/Media Practice as Research or a closely related discipline, with an excellent knowledge and understanding of a field of expertise relating to the Global South, New Media, Television, and Film/Media Practice as Research. They will be a highly effective educator, with experience of teaching and assessment in Higher Education, a commitment to student learning and welfare, and an aptitude for working within an interdisciplinary framework.

The post is an open-ended position with a probation period, which is usually three years. King’s is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion and through this appointment it is our aim to develop candidate pools that include applicants from all backgrounds and communities. We particularly encourage applications from people from global minority ethnicities, women, LGBTQ+ identities, and from people with disabilities. We encourage applications from all backgrounds, communities and industries, and are committed to employing a team that has diverse skills, experiences and abilities.

In applying for this role please include a covering letter clearly indicating how you meet the essential and desirable criteria below, and an up-to-date CV. Applicants are asked to include, as part of their covering letter, a separate statement describing past experience of, and/or future plans for, promoting diversity and inclusion.

Contract type

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract.

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.

Closing date: 24 March 2024
