Job description

King’s Climate & Sustainability (KCS) is a university-wide initiative created in 2023 to step up our response to the challenge of climate emergency and global sustainability, and to accelerate and connect research, education and action across King’s. With an ambition to become a net zero institution, King’s has already made progress to embed sustainability into our operations. We are now uniquely positioned to amplify, connect and scale impactful research, education and action, build new connections between fields of study – including technological, socio-economic, legal, geopolitical – and create meaningful external partnerships to deliver strong, distinctive and visible contributions to the challenge of achieving just and fair transitions to sustainability.

The Programme Manager plays a key role in developing and maintaining robust programme plans and project structures to support the KCS transformation programme, which includes management of multiple workstreams and line management of two project officers (one supporting education and the other supporting research). KCS has five primary workstreams (research, education, communications, philanthropy and operations) and the role holder will oversee both day-to-day project delivery as well as wider strategy development to ensure that all workstreams run cohesively. This also involves managing project monitoring and reporting mechanisms, including risk and issue management.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract until 31 July 2026.

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

  • Education to degree level or equivalent professional experience in programme or project management, operations or administration.
  • Solid understanding of project management methods, techniques and tools for the effective delivery of projects, with demonstrated experience in the organisation and planning of complex workstreams.
  • Strong analytical skills and confidence in working with data; able to provide insight that helps inform decisions and plans.
  • Experience of managing staff in a supportive and inclusive way.
  • Experience of collaborative team working to deliver successful outcomes and the ability to engage with stakeholders, including with senior colleagues, adapting message, style and manner as needed.
  • Interest in climate and sustainability issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to produce clear and concise written materials and experience of supporting senior committees.
  • IT literate, including the ability to use all Microsoft packages, project software tools and an aptitude and desire to learn to use new technology.
  • Flexible, emotionally intelligent and comfortable with ambiguity and change, with the ability to work independently and proactively, using own judgement and initiative when appropriate.

Desirable criteria

  • A recognised qualification in programme or project management.
  • Understanding of change management and experience in implementing strategies for effective change.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the UK Higher Education sector.
