LSE is committed to building a diverse, equitable and truly inclusive university

Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment

Salary from £70,113 to £89,969 pa inclusive of London allowance

This is a fixed term appointment until November 2026, with extension subject to further funding.

The Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment (the Institute) is establishing a new specialist sub-centre focused on strengthening research and developing policy analysis and other outputs, by convening policymakers and by providing technical support, assistance and capacity-building.  This centre will support the reforms necessary to deliver sustainable and resilient economies and financial systems across Europe. We seek to appoint an experienced Director to develop and lead the Economic and Fiscal programme, and a team working on the role of economic and fiscal authorities (e.g., finance, economic, climate and environment ministries) in supporting the transition and managing fiscal and economic impact.

The Director will lead and develop the centre’s Economic and Fiscal policy programme and its research foundation activities, secure its relevance for governments and economic and finance ministries, and manage the team. They will determine those aspects of the overall direction of the new centre relating to Economic and Fiscal policy and be responsible for the operational planning and organisation of major projects and programmes, as well as lead the recruiting of and manage a growing team working on the research, policy, engagement and capacity and technical assistance aspects of the Economic and Fiscal policy programme. They will conduct extensive engagement activities at the highest level, to ensure that research outputs have demonstrable impact and inform the public debate. They will also lead the production of quality research papers, some of which could also be published in the highest ranked academic outlets, as well as research-based policy-relevant outputs, including but not restricted to policy reports and briefs, working papers, presentations or blogs, in a timely manner.

Candidates will have a Master’s degree in finance, economics, environmental economics/policy, sustainable finance, development studies, management, law or a closely related field. Candidates should also have extensive experience and knowledge of the role of fiscal and economic policy, and role of development banks with strong understanding of climate finance and the challenges (and opportunities) that European institutions face – both at a research and applied policy level. Candidates should have significant experience in leading the organisation of strategic engagement activities (with international research and policy audiences in the public and private sectors), and they should also have strong track-record of producing research and policy-relevant outputs (e.g., research papers, policy reports and presentations) on issues relating to implications of environmental degradation and the economic transition for fiscal and economic policy.

We offer an occupational pension scheme, generous annual leave, hybrid working, and excellent training and development opportunities.
