Research Software Engineer

Duration: fixed term position until 31st March 2027

About the role:

The digital Experimental Cancer Medicine Team (dECMT) at the CRUK National Biomarker Centre (NBC) aims to digitally empower patients and healthcare professionals to innovate and design new cancer care pathways. We are looking for a Research Software Engineer to contribute to the success of the new data-driven Artificial Intelligence (AI) initiatives at the NBC to work on end-to-end technology solutions for digital oncology projects.

This position will involve continuous interaction with experts in cancer research and AI and will include the full lifecycle of software development and system engineering using specific methods ranging from data science and AI models to data visualisation and user interfaces for medical decision support applications. Reliable delivery of accessible AI, data science and analytics for cancer diagnosis and treatment is a key part of the dECMT strategy.

About you

You will have a PhD in a technology discipline (computer science, computer engineering) or relevant field or have a relevant postgraduate degree in computer science, computer engineering (or related field) along with significant relevant experience. You will have significant relevant experience of delivering research IT solutions along with substantial relevant experience in developing complex user-facing, web-based software systems. Software prototypes in Python and modern web technologies, such as JavaScript and React, is essential. Exposure to contemporary AI methods and Large Language Models (LLMs) are desirable as is a knowledge of the essentials of biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, proteomics, or cell biology.
