The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research.

We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee.

Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to collectively, and individually, make a real difference.

The role

Applications are invited for an MRC-funded Research Fellow based in the herpesvirus research group run by Prof. Gill Elliott in the Section of Virology, School of Biosciences and Medicine, University of Surrey.

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a comprehensive research programme into the biology of herpes simplex virus, with particular focus on the role of the virion host shutoff (vhs) protein in RNA metabolism and translational control during infection. The successful candidate will explore how vhs alters the cellular environment and how it intersects with other virus proteins involved in controlling the progression of virus infection.

Our well-equipped laboratory is located in the School of Biosciences at the beautiful campus of the University of Surrey, close to London. The dynamic and growing Section of Virology is comprised of five research groups focused on the molecular and cellular basis of disease caused by a range of important human and animal pathogens including herpesviruses, poxviruses, SARS-CoV2, RSV and arboviruses.

About you

We are therefore looking for a highly motivated individual with or about to obtain a PhD in a biological science, and proven ability in virus research. Consideration will also be given to those without a PhD but with the required skills and experience. A background in RNA biology or transcriptomics would also be highly beneficial.

How to apply

Please apply on the university page. When completing the online application form, please ensure you include a one-page cover letter explaining why you have applied for the role.

For an informal discussion, please contact Prof. Gill Elliott (g.elliott@surrey.ac.uk).

Interviews are likely to be held in the week beginning 15/04/24

Further details:

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£34,980) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate.  Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£36,024).
