Job summary

Applications are encouraged for two Research Associate positions in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London, to work as part of the Resilient Sustainable Infrastructure Group (www.imperial.ac.uk/resilient-sustainable-infrastructure). The project, led by Dr Alalea Kia, aims to investigate the structural performance of next-generation concrete pavement structures used in critical infrastructure, such as highways and airports.

A new concrete pavement called Kiacrete has been developed that challenges the current situation with its unique engineered structure. This project will consist of the design, modelling and testing of new concrete pavement structures to enable the wider use of this innovative technology.  The initial term will be one year.

Duties and responsibilities

You will be responsible for designing, simulating and testing new concrete pavement structures, supported by CAD (e.g. Rhino, SolidWorks), finite element modelling (e.g. ABAQUS) and physical experiments on small- and large-scale test specimens in the Structures Laboratory.

Essential Requirements

  • Hold a PhD in Structural Engineering or a closely related field, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience and ideally MSc in Civil/Structural Engineering
  • Experience in the design of reinforced concrete elements
  • Experience of structural laboratory testing and numerical modelling
  • Experience in developing engineering drawings
  • Practical experience within a research environment and/or publication in relevant and refereed journals
  • Ability to conduct a detailed review of recent literature
  • Ability to communicate effectively via presentations and written publications
  • Willingness to work as part of a team and to be open-minded and cooperative
