The role

Applications are invited for a full-time postdoctoral research fellow B position, with a 26-month duration starting from 15th April 2024 (or soon thereafter if a later start is required by the successful applicants), to develop advanced controllers and state estimators for electric articulated vehicles.

The post is part of a Horizon Europe project that aims to develop new control systems and energy management algorithms for fully electric battery and fuel-cell trucks. The role will encompass activities such as laboratory experiments, road tests, data analysis, and collaboration with fellow project participants. It will also involve documenting the findings in formal reports and contributing to the development of high-quality journal or conference papers and other necessary outputs. The research will be carried out with collaborators from several industrial and academic institutions. The project outcomes will be evaluated beyond the state-of-the-art vehicle demonstrators provided by leading automotive manufacturers. A budget for travel will be provided.

About you

This is a Research Fellow B position, so the successful candidate must have a strong background in automotive engineering and should hold a Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering,  automotive engineering,  or similar areas. Also, knowledge in the following areas is required:

  • Articulated vehicle dynamics 
  • Torque-allocation control
  • Control of articulated vehicles
  • Real-time implementation of algorithms (e.g. dSPACE)
  • Cost-effective design strategies (both HW and SW)
  • Sustainable design methods (e.g.Life Cycle Analysis) 
  • X- in the loop simulations
  • Strong research and analytical skills

You need to have good programming and experimental skills. The candidates should be motivated and enthusiastic to work in a team environment and should have experience in communicating findings in journal papers.

Furthermore, it is highly desirable to have an experience on:

  • Management of the EU-funded projects 
  • Supervision of students
  • Experience in researchers’ supervision

We are also looking for good written and spoken English language skills.

The appointee will join the Software Defined EV and AV Laboratory at the Centre of Automotive Engineering of the Mechanical Engineering Sciences Department at the University of Surrey, which has research interests in a wide range of topics, including active vehicle dynamics, electric powertrains, transmission systems for electric and hybrid electric vehicles as well as trajectory planning and control algorithms.
