Postdoc Position: CFD Modelling of Gas Flows and Local Temperatures in an Electron Microscope project

Are you intrigued by the prospect of applying your expertise in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model gas flows and temperature distributions? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you.

Within our European Research Council project, we're delving into electrochemical measurements within a transmission electron microscope (TEM) to explore the structure and composition of operating solid oxide fuel and electrolysis cells (SOEC/SOFC). In these intricate experiments, precise temperature control is paramount.

The temperature regulation of the TEM sample relies on a heater element embedded in a small micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) chip, which also serves as the support for the sample. While past projects have examined temperature distributions over MEMS chips in vacuum conditions, our focus is on understanding the potential impact of flowing gases within the microscope chamber on temperature, especially at a local level directly over the TEM sample.

To tackle this challenge, we're seeking a candidate with strong expertise in CFD modelling, preferably with experience in simulating low gas pressure conditions (the total gas pressure in the microscope chamber being a few mbar). Your role will involve collaborating closely with another team member who will conduct temperature measurements in the Environmental Transmission Electron Microscope (ETEM) for comparison with your modelling results.

This project is part of the ERC project HEIST, where we've pioneered a unique operando TEM method enabling the analysis of material degradation in SOEC/SOFC. Our findings suggest the presence of localized temperature variations within our miniature cells, emphasizing the critical need to quantify and manage these variations effectively.

Responsibilities and qualifications

As a key member of our team, you'll spearhead CFD modelling efforts, drawing on your solid experience in modelling gas flows and temperatures. Ideal candidates should possess:

  • Strong competences in CFD modelling
  • Experience with simulations of gas flows
  • Proficient communication skills in English, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving, capable of identifying new directions and opportunities within the project

As a formal requirement, candidates must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).
