EPSRC DTP Studentship - Long-span Timber-hybrid Cellular Beams for more Sustainable Structural Design

University of Cambridge - Department of Engineering

Qualification Type: PhD
Location: Cambridge
Funding for: UK Students
Funding amount: Not Specified
Hours: Full Time
Placed On: 20th March 2024
Closes: 1st April 2024
Reference: NM40975

Reducing the environmental impact of the built environment requires more sustainable structural design. This means using better structural materials and using structural materials better. Achieving efficient, constructable solutions for floor systems that require both long spans and flexible service layouts has been a barrier to the adoption of new lower net carbon materials, such as engineered timber, in the commercial building sector worldwide. The aim of this project is thus to develop, test and produce design guidance for timber-hybrid cellular beam solutions for long-span floor systems.

During this research, you will use a combination of analytical, numerical and experimental research methods to understand the behaviour of timber-hybrid cellular beams and then use this understanding to inform design. You will have the opportunity to investigate novel timber-hybrid cellular beam concepts proposed by industrial partners and to develop your own design solutions.

You will be part of a supportive research group that embraces diversity and enables flexible working. We are centred in the new Civil Engineering Building which accommodates both state-of-the-art lab spaces and a vibrant community of research students, researchers, academics and more.

Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) at least a good 2.1 degree in an Engineering or related subject. Knowledge or experience of structural analysis, numerical modelling and/or experimental testing is desirable. Industrial experience is welcome but not expected. A background in timber engineering is similarly welcome but not expected.

EPSRC DTP studentships are fully-funded (fees and maintenance) for students eligible for Home fees. Full eligibility criteria can be found via the following link; www.postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/finance/fees/what-my-fee-status

Applications should be submitted via the University of Cambridge Applicant Portal www.postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/directory/egegpdpeg, with Dr Rob Foster identified as the potential supervisor. Applications may close early if the position is filled before the advertised date.

The University actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from all sections of society.
