The School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, at the University of Birmingham, is seeking to appoint a full-time faculty member at Associate Professor level. The appointment will make substantial contributions to research, education, and administration of the school, in particular the newly developed Centre for Movement and Wellbeing (MoveWell) https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/centre-for-movement-and-wellbeing/about-us.

MoveWell will enhance the reputation of one the UK’s strongest Schools, building our strengths as a leading research-informed teaching department with deep-rooted civic connections. A trailblazing centre for health and wellness of diverse communities and groups, MoveWell is dedicated to elevating physical and mental wellbeing to new heights. The centre will offer a range of services and activities for various clinical groups, through purpose-built exercise training facilities and a physiotherapy clinic. MoveWell offers a platform to conduct cutting-edge research and translation of the latest scientific advancements into practical clinical applications. The role holder(s) will be expected to make substantial contributions to our new MSc in Clinical Exercise Physiology to develop future allied health professionals.

As an Associate Professor in Clinical Exercise Physiology, you will:

  • Have a clear research vision and an established international reputation in an area aligned to lifestyle and health, with evidenced translation and impactful outcomes.
  • Lead on programme delivery and enhancement in clinical exercise physiology and exercise and health sciences, ensuring an excellent educational experience for students.
  • Generate significant research income through external and or commercial/industry funding avenues.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across the university and beyond, enhancing the international reputation of the school and MoveWell for impactful research and education.
  • Work collaboratively to support others, and lead/manage areas of activity in the School and MoveWell through knowledge transfer, enterprise, and public engagement.

Person Specification

  • Doctoral qualification in an area related to the role.
  • An AHCS Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist or working towards registration. 
  • Experience of working in clinical exercise physiology environments, with at least one of the following broad conditions: cancer, cardiovascular, frailty, renal, mental health, metabolic, musculoskeletal, neurological, respiratory.
  • Extensive experience conducting physiological assessments; e.g. cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CEPT), electrocardiogram (ECG), respiratory function tests and other functional capacity tests, such as six-minute walk test, muscular strength, and fitness testing.
  • Experience and achievement reflected in an established reputation in a research area related to clinical exercise physiology.
  • Evidence of having led on externally funded research projects.
