Annual Leave: 35 days plus standard public holidays and an additional 4 days including the closure of our office between Christmas and New Year

Main duties and responsibilities

Academic Skills Tutors play an essential role in providing high quality teaching and coordinating support and guidance for students with non-specialist aspects of academic work such as reading academic texts, finding information, writing clearly and structuring work appropriately, constructing arguments, referencing, academic integrity, oral presentations, and postgraduate and doctoral dissertation and research projects support. Academic support is offered to students through team teaching with HBS lecturers, daily seminars, an online Academic Skills module, and on a one-to-one advisory drop-in basis, through self or tutor referral. It is desirable that the appointee will be able to teach via a variety of delivery methods e.g. blended, online, face-to-face. In addition, the Academic Skills Tutor will advise academic staff in teaching, learning and assessment, particularly with international students.

Skill and experience required

Substantive proven experience of teaching Academic Skills is essential. Previous experience of teaching or tutoring at undergraduate, postgraduate and international students is essential, along with an understanding of the educational needs of HE students. You will have practical knowledge of this role, knowledge and understanding of the strategic developments in the HE sector and the strategic goals of the University. An understanding of students’ prior learning experiences and how these might influence their current educational expectations is essential. 

An ability to maintain and develop knowledge and skills and contribute to curriculum development as required by the position is required. Knowledge of student management systems and processes is essential. You will be able to work effectively and flexibly on own initiative, as well as within a team, being responsive and adaptable to the role requirements and workload.  You will demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and possess excellent planning, organisation and time management skills.

The job is on a five day out of seven basis, so may include occasional weekend work. A flexible attitude to working hours is essential.

Qualifications required

The appointee will have a minimum of a Masters degree/level 7 qualification (or equivalent) in a relevant subject area and Fellowship of AdvanceHE (or demonstrable ability to work towards) is essential.
