Embedded within the School of Nursing and Public Health, the Mental Health Team has brought significant contributions to the global field of mental health. Our work embodies humanitarian rights and social justice to better understand the complexities of trauma associated with mental health and how to prevent severe mental health problems and long-term institutionalisation. We use improvement-orientated methods that challenge cultural barriers and power imbalances, working closely with policy Think Tank groups, clinical staff, commissioners, community pillars, people with lived experience and their families to influence policy and practice.
We were awarded NIHR grants to lead on research in health and justice inequalities for black men detained under the Mental Health Act and other commissioned research focusing on reducing restrictive practices for people with mental health problems, those with a learning disability and autistic people. We work closely with NHS trusts, strategically contributing to the development and evaluation of their research strands and initiatives. Our world-leading research has generated impact beyond academia, informing the development of local and national guidelines to minimise coercive practices in mental health settings. We are part of strong international networks in this area, e.g., EViPRG Group (https://www.eviprg.eu/) and FOSTREN (https://fostren.eu/), working collaboratively to generate change at European level and beyond.
