The role

The High-Performance Networks group (HPN), part of the Smart Internet Lab (SIL), is internationally leading and highly influential in the field of quantum networking.

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic person, with passion for research in topics such as quantum networks, entanglement distribution, quantum key distribution, advanced optical network for quantum technologies and artificial intelligence in optical/quantum networks.  

You will be offered one of the following salary grades: Research Associate (I), Senior Research Associate (J); depending on the skills and experience you are able to bring to the role. 

What will you be doing?

The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out research on the entanglement-based quantum networks and developing various use cases including but not limited to applying machine learning algorithms for network optimisation, exploring the dynamicity of the quantum network and co-existence scheme of quantum links with classical optical channels.

Some demonstrated research experience with QKD experiments and optical networking experiments is preferred.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the research in the HPN group by developing future networking solutions for quantum technologies over deployed network testbeds in Bristol. 

You should apply if

You should apply if you have: 

  • Track record of experimental research in quantum communication.
  • A track record of scientific publications in optical systems or networks.
  • Demonstrated lab experience in optical networking.
  • An MSc or PhD in Photonics, Computer Science, or Electrical Engineering, or another closely related field, or relevant experience. 
  • Excellent verbal and presentation communication skills and the ability to deal with a wide range of people
  • Ability to prioritise own work in response to deadlines 

Additional information

Salary: Grade I £37,099 – £41,732 per annum; Grade J £41,732 - £46,974 per annum
