Contract Type: open ended

Hours: Full time although part time (minimum 30 hours per week) will be considered.

Hybrid working options will be considered with minimum number of days required on site per week typically at least 60%.

Location: Daresbury Laboratory, Warrington

About the role

Following the recent refurbishment of the library at Daresbury an exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Librarian to work as part of a team of librarians supporting the provision of library services at STFC. The role will be part of the library services team delivering library services across STFC and has staff based at both the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in Oxfordshire and the Daresbury Laboratory (DL) in Cheshire. This post will be based at the Daresbury Laboratory.

The purpose of the role is to deliver, promote and assist in the use of library services providing day-to-day support for library users at the Daresbury Laboratory. The successful candidate will be the first point of contact for library users, be responsible for maintaining the physical collection and promotion of library services. Additionally working with colleagues across both sites you will contribute to the delivery and development of the STFC library provision.

About you

We are looking for a dedicated and motivated individual who can an demonstrate an excellent customer service ethos and be comfortable working both as part of a team and on your own. You will be able to effectively manage your own time and workload, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and demonstrate the ability to develop and enhance the team’s service to our library users.

You will have an awareness of and a keen interest in the delivery of library services and development of library collections management and awareness of the developments in open science and how they impact on library services.

Occasional travel which may require overnight stays to attend meetings and training events within the UK is a requirement of this role.

To join us you will need:

  • Experience of and interest in library work which may be demonstrated by:
  • a qualification in Library and Information Management, Library studies or related subject, OR Cilip professional registration, OR Previous work in a library or information service.
  • Experience of working in a customer-facing role and delivering a user-centric service.
  • Experience of working effectively within a small team and able to contribute towards a positive team dynamic within the wider group.
  • Able to communicate with staff at all levels within the organisation and form effective working relationships.
  • Able to work unsupervised under own initiative, organising and prioritising tasks as required.
  • Confident IT user in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint and SharePoint
  • Excellent written communication skills
