About the role
BGS are looking to recruit two Core Store Technicians to join their National Geoscience Data Centre for a fixed-term appointment of 12 months. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a great eye for detail to join the small, busy Core Store Team. You will report directly to the Warehouse Manager and work very closely with the rest of the team.
Based at the BGS headquarters in Keyworth, the team manages access to the physical collections held in the Core Store of the National Geoscience Data Centre (NGDC).
You will be involved in the curation of new and legacy core material to the Collections as well as dealing with internal and external customers who visit the Core Store. You will also deal with returning material to the Core Store and other manual handling activities including stock checks of the physical collections.
About you
With 5 GCSEs and/or 2 A ‘levels (including Maths and English) (or Intermediate Level 2 Apprentice), you should have experience in working as part of a team, ideally with some customer service experience. You will also have a proven ability to work unsupervised (after appropriate training) and an interest in collections management.
A working knowledge of Excel, Outlook, and Access to upload scientific data to databases is a requirement of the post, as well as a proven ability to follow instructions and to carry out repetitive tasks with very good attention to detail.
Applicants must be physically fit, and able to carry out regular and repetitive manual handling. BGS will provide Forklift and Very Narrow Aisle truck driver training and you will also be trained to operate cutting laboratory machinery such as saws, drills, and lathes to create geomaterial samples for the scientific community to conduct their scientific analysis.
