Professor in Advanced Materials for Environmental and Resource Engineering

Technical University of Denmark - DTU Sustain

Location: Lyngby - Denmark
Salary: Based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 5th April 2024
Closes: 26th April 2024

Advanced materials are playing an ever-increasing role in many environmental applications, ranging from drinking water production, wastewater treatment, and pollutant management to energy production and resource recovery. Combining advanced materials with catalysis, structuring, and membrane processes offers a powerful tool for greener and more circular solutions to manage water-energy nexus and recover resources. To strengthen the research and education in this field, the Department of Environmental and Resource Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Sustain) invites applications for a Full Professor position in Advanced Materials for Environmental and Resource Engineering.

Responsibilities and qualifications

We seek applicants to accelerate the deployment of transformative technologies in the real world for greener and circular solutions in terms of research, education and innovation and to provide scientific advice to relevant stakeholders. You are expected to employ fundamental principles at the convergence of material science, catalysis and membrane processes to synthesize, structure, characterize, and implement novel materials into next-generation sustainable technologies for water, energy and resource recovery.

Employment implies original research, education and innovation activities t the highest international level within one or more of the following research themes:

  •  Advanced materials (e.g.,nano-structured materials as absorbents and catalysts)
  • Photocatalysis
  • Physical-chemical water treatment
  • Electrochemistry in fuel cells and electrolysis
  • Membrane fabrication and processes for water and energy technologies
  • Enzymatic membrane reactors for micropollutant degradation
  • Electrospinning

Your primary tasks will be, in collaboration with the group, to:

  • Strengthen the competence of the group in the following fields:
    • Synthesizing advanced materials for environmental applications: Metal-organic Frameworks, Layered double hydroxide, Zeolites and nanostructured fibers or catalysts
    • Employing advanced synthesis and fabrication methods to tailor the material’s structure and functionality: electrospinning, solution plasma, hydrothermal reaction, and sintering.
    • Developing new membrane materials for more sustainable processes: polymeric, ceramic, carbon, enzyme, and composite.
    • Optimizing membrane processes: micro-/ultra-/nano-filtration, reverse osmosis, forward osmosis, membrane distillation and reverse electrodialysis
    • Designing membrane reactors: combining membrane processes with photocatalysis, electrochemistry and enzymatic reaction.
    • Exploring technological solutions to address challenges in the water and energy technologies: depletion of emerging pollutants (e.g., pharmaceutical chemicals, PFAS), removal and upcycling of microplastics, ultrapure water production for Power-00to-X and sustainable industrial water reuse.
    • Applying the assessment tools to provide design principles for membrane materials and process development: life-cycle analysis, toxicity.
  • Perform research at an international level in the cross-field of water, energy, waste, resources, sustainability, and circularity.
  • Contribute to research in the group and with colleagues in related sections (e.g., Management of water systems, Materials and durability, Waste and circularity, Chemicals in the Environment and Quantitative sustainability assessment)
  • Provide public sector consultancy to inform decision-making with regard to water technology.
  • Teach and supervise BSc and MSc student projects and be the supervisor for PhD students covering a broad range of water-related topics.

Application procedure

Your complete online application must be submitted no later than 26 April 2024 (23:59 Danish time).
